PLANTERSVILLE — Jessica Spears knows she wants to go to Alabama State University, but she also wants to play basketball. That’s why she chose Middle Georgia College.

She then plans to transfer to Alabama State, where she had an offer but didn’t want to be redshirted.

“They have a successful basketball program.” Spears said. “It’s a real friendly environment, like a home away from home.”

Spears, who also plays softball, said she plans to study social work.

Dallas County basketball coach Charles Thomson said Spears has a good work ethic that will help her at the college level.

“She’s a great athlete, and it’s been a while since we’ve had one like her,” Thompson said. “She’s outspoken and she doesn’t mind putting the team on her back. Those are things you look for in a leader.”
