On this same page our regular readers will see a letter from Hannah Gold of Nashville, Ind.

Hannah is in the fifth grade. Her class is studying places around the United States. She picked Selma.

What a wonderful opportunity for us to tell the Selma story in a variety of ways! We can tell her about being the Butterfly Capital of Alabama, and how we earned the designation through the hard work of Mallieve Breeding and local garden clubs.

We can tell her about ArtsRevive and the Selma Art Guild, two organizations that brighten our lives with works of art and photography, and seminars.

Hannah needs to know about our Selma-Dallas County Public Library and its Lunch at the Library program and some of the events we’ve had here. We need to let her know frequent guests are world-renown artist Charlie The Tin Man Lucas and storyteller Kathyrn Tucker Windham. The fifth-grader probably will be surprised to find out about the aquarium in the children’s section of the library and the other surprises on that upper floor.

Hannah said her town is an artist colony and center of tourism.

We should let her know about the thousands of people who come for Market Day and the Tale Tellin’, Bridge Crossing Jubilee, the Pilgrimage and the re-enactment of The Battle of Selma.

She asks only for a picture postcard of our area and for some unique features.
