The National Math Bee is all a game.

Students will play a computer game called BatterUp for the national competition on May 7 in Indianapolis at the Indianapolis Zoo.

“It is a competition where students work on their facts and become very proficient at their facts and very quick at their facts,” said Jo Ann Bedwell, sponsor and fourth grade teacher at Clark Elementary. “It’s set up like a baseball game and they can make a single or double or homerun depending on how fast they are.”

Students will leave by bus Wednesday for the Friday competition.

Clark Elementary School has participated in the competition for more than five years.

This year, the school is sending 61 of the 191 nationally qualified students to the competition. All students represent a total of 15 states.

The competition is for students in first through fifth grade.

First- and second-grade students compete in addition and subtraction, third and fourth grades compete in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and fifth- and sixth-grade students compete in multiplication and division.

Each team can only compete in one of the categories.

Two students who will attend the competition are fifth grade students Dontranique DuBose and Zemeria Lee.

“I have worked very hard because I have learned all my times tables and all my division,” Dontranique said. “I have good confidence that we are going to do good.”

She learned to love math because she likes counting money.

“I like money and my momma said for me to get money I’m going to have to learn my math,” Dontranique said.

Zemeria likes math because it intrigues her.

“I like seeing how far you can go and how big numbers can get,” Zemeria said.

To qualify for nationals, students had to compete at classroom level, school level, district level and state level.

Students had to place in the top three in their grade level and math mode in the state to qualify for the national competition.

Zemeria feels the teams from Clark will do well. Her main piece of advice for students is:

“Don’t be nervous.”

First place students will receive a $1000 scholarship to Virginia College.

The school has been able to cover the cost of travel and hotel rooms, but the school is looking to buy snacks for the children to eat on the bus ride and for incidentals.
