For those who work hard, there is often a reward at the end.

At the weekly Rotary Club of Selma lunch Monday, six students from the surrounding area had their chance to explain why they should be rewarded for a scholarship that will give them the reward for their hard work in high school .

“We do this every year,” said Mike Bruner, co-head of the scholarship committee. “What we do is have a first-, second- and third-place winner.”

The students that were selected this year were LaQuanda Robinson of Keith High Landon Nichols of Meadowview Christian School, Theresa Webb of Dallas County High, Laurne Swindle of John T. Morgan Academy, Darrius Moore of Selma Early College and Ashlyn Goodwin of Selma High.

“I’m pretty nervous,” said Webb before the program started. “As long as I don’t trip on my way up there, I think I will be ok.”

According to Bruner, the students were selected by their respective schools because of their excellent grades, community leadership and ability to overcome obstacles in life.

“Our school held a competition to see who would come here,” said Jessica Crow, an English teacher from Dallas County High, School who came to support Webb. “Theresa was the top scorer.”

Family members and staff from the schools of the contestants came along to show their support.

“We have them come in and they have five minutes to speak on the achievements they have done, extracurricular activities and how well they can speak in front of people,” said Bruner.

Each contestant stood in front of the members of Rotary and gave their speeches on why he or she deserved the award.

The winner will be announced sometime within the next two weeks.
