Selma City Council President Dr. Geraldine Allen died of cancer Saturday, according to city officials.

Dr. Allen was serving her first term as council president. Previously, she had represented Ward 4.

Congressman Artur Davis, who was in town opening his headquarters for his Democratic gubernatorial bid, offered his condolences to the family and to Selma, calling Allen’s death an “enormous tragedy.”
