Thursday night, people in and around Selma came together to support the Selma and Black Belt Regional Abuse Center Sanctuary in its fifteenth annual charity auction.

SABRA Sanctuary is a domestic violence shelter that takes in victims from in and around Selma and the surrounding counties and helps them get back on their feet.

“Last year we had around 89 women and children that came through our shelter,” said Nancy Travis, director of SABRA Sanctuary. “We don’t have a time limit as long as they are working with a case manager trying to do whatever.”

SABRA Sanctuary also has gone into the schools to educated children on the dangers of domestic violence and abuse.

“We go into the schools with a lot of programs,” said “Primary prevention education is our big thing right now, with sexual assault and domestic violence.”

Auctioneer Bob Green and Mark Woodson came together to auction off 37 packages of donated items to raise money to help SABRA Sanctuary.

“We are local,” said Travis. “All of the money raised here goes to us.”

SABRA Sanctuary holds other fundraiser throughout the year, but the annual auction is the largest for the group.

“It seems like it is growing as far as people who are donating,” said Stephanie Ledbetter, a victims Advocate in Wilcox County for SABRA Sanctuary. “I think we have sold 10 or 15 more tables this year.”

Ledbetter said that she would like to see even more people come next year to help SABRA Sanctuary.

“We are helping so many people,” said Ledbetter. “And it’s such a fun time every year.”
