New eatery touts food, atmosphere

Fish and Loaves has the best steak in town—or so it claims.

“If they don’t like it, I’ll buy it back,” said Kerry Horton, managing partner of the restaurant. “If you don’t believe me, I’ll make you want to take it with you, on me.”

Each steak is hand-cut and cooked without thermometers or timers.

“I just cook them to eye,” Horton said.

Open since March 22, the restaurant is located on West Highland Avenue in the former building of Mutt’s Wings and Pizza.

“We are in the crawling stages,” Horton said. “We haven’t gotten to a grand opening yet.”

Horton and the other managers are searching for additional short order cooks and wait staff.

“What we are trying to provide, and what we want to maintain, is that nobody will beat us in customer service,” Horton said. “Customer service is our number one. If we have a bad food day, you’re still going to get good service. Nine times out of 10, if you provide a good service, people are going to give you another shot. If we mess up one time, we won’t mess up twice.”

The name of the restaurant comes from Matthew 14:13-21, which is printed on the front of every menu.

“In the passage, the disciples fed 5,000 men, women and children with two fish and five loaves of bread,” Horton said.

The interior design is simple and sophisticated.

“We wanted a good, clean atmosphere for people to come to,” Horton said.

William E. Blakes, a local artist, has worked to ensure that the restaurant has an underwater motif.

“Being that they sell fish, and the name is Fish and Loaves, we were just trying to give people the experience of seeing a lot of underwater stuff,” Blakes said. “We have shrimp and fish boats, and over there is an old wrecked ship.”

Fish and Loaves is open seven days a week. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Every Friday is a catfish buffet from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Take-out is also available.
