Habitat for Humanity raised money Thursday night for repairs to a house that sustained more than $15,000 worth of damage after a recent break-in.

Many people gathered at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center for the seventh annual Habitat for Humanity auction.

“This is the seventh annual fundraiser that we have done,” said Nina Capps, executive director for Selma Habitat for Humanity. “We are having ‘Hopping to New Beginnings and Taste of Selma’”

Several restaurants brought different menu items to the convention center for attendees.

“We have French fries from Hardee’s, and hamburgers from McDonalds,” Cappsa said. “We have barbecue from Lannie’s. Many things that people will enjoy.”

The people attending enjoyed the different selection as the bid on a silent auction with donated products from around the city.

Later in the evening a live auction was held by Bill Gamble.

According to Capps, the money raised at the event was going to the home that was recently built by Habitat.

“You know it got broken into twice,” Capps said. “When you get insurance, it doesn’t cover everything, but we are trying to figure out a way to not tear the sheetrock of the walls again. Re-install the copper-tubing and everything, so it will cost a little more because it will have to be paid people instead of volunteers.”

The home was broken into on the weekend of October 17, 2009.

More than $15,000 of damage was estimated on the house, which was a washer and dryer shy of completion.

Habitat for Humanity has been serving the Selma area since 1987 building homes.

“We are trying to make a difference,” said Capps.
