SELMA — Dallas County pitching allowed one base runner and struck out the nine Southside batters it faced and helped the Hornets roll to an 18-0 win in three innings Thursday at Craig Field.

Cassie Daniels started on the mound and gave up one single to Marcella Cox in two inning. She recorded six strikeouts, and Whitney Denson struck out the side in the third.

“Our starting defense hasn’t given up more than one run a game since the second game of the year,” Dallas County coach Ed Miller said. “Our defense is rock solid. We feel if we can score three runs, we can win.”

It only took the Hornets six batters to score that many runs Thursday. Dallas County had eight total runs in the first inning and five each in the second and third.

“We were trying to work on hitting the ball to center and right field,” Miller said. “We’ve been pulling the ball, and we’ve got to start hitting better to all fields. We need to keep our hands in the box a strike zone longer.”

Miller substituted his entire lineup in the third inning.

Southside coach April O’Neal said the game was a learning experience and a chance to get her players accustomed to seeing faster pitching.

“This is our second year, and most of my girls were trained in slow pitch, so they’re just not able to catch up to the ball,” O’Neal said. “Once we get the concept down, we’ll be ready to go.”
