SELMA — Federal assistance is available for most high school students who want to attend a college or university.

But there are deadlines to meet.

Nobody knows this rule of thumb better than college and university administrators. To help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, Concordia College of Selma will hold a session Friday, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on campus.

“Its primary purpose is to get high school students to complete and submit their FAFSA,” said Dr. Stanford Angion, director of student life and an assistant professor of English at Concordia.

FAFSA is used to apply for federal student aid in the form of grants, work-study programs and loans. Students also can use the application to apply for state and private financial assistance.

“It also opens up the door to other grants and, sometimes, other scholarships,” Angion said.

During the session, students will complete the 2010-2011 FAFSA online, but they’ll need to bring some information with them: a 2009 federal 1040 income tax return or a 2009 non-taxable income information for a full year, such as Social Security, SSI, disability, welfare or unemployment.

Students also will need Social Security numbers.
