SELMA — Selma City Council members will soon take a look at constructing a new outlet for boaters at the City Marina.

Council members examined some roughly drawn plans Tuesday night at the city council meeting. Elton Reece, director of the city Recreation Department, said he had one of the city league coaches draw up something as an example of what could go at the site.

A restaurant at the city’s marina burned in September. At that time, officials said the building was a total loss.

Mayor George Evans said the structure to replace the restaurant would move up the hill from the earlier location, which was near the river. Plans also call for a 10-foot lift to the structure.

Reece said moving the site to the hillside and building it up 10 feet should alleviate flooding. The previous building floated when flood waters rose.

The recreation director said he used old engineering data to mark the 100-year-flood high water at 119 feet. “Flood should not get it, but you never know,” he said.

Plans also call for an angled building with views of the river and the docks. It’s uncertain what will go in the building. That would likely rest with the successful bidder to run the operation for the city.

However, said Reece, the building will not house a McDonald’s or a “meat and three.”

“It’s got to meet the needs of all people,” he said.
