The Greenville man who threatened to jump off of the Edmund Pettus Bridge yesterday will likely not be charged with any type of crime, according to police.

“While attempted suicide is technically a crime, it is not often that they are charged with anything,” said Sgt. Doug Stewart, of the Selma Police Department.

The situation was one that police have been trained to handle.

“We have a negotiator that we utilize that has been trained for this type of situation,” said Sgt. Stewart. “We try to meet the requests of the person up to a reasonable point.”

According to Stewart the negotiator is used to keep victims from committing a drastic action.

“They longer we are there, the better we are doing,” said Stewart.

The fire rescue squad was also on hand, but Fire Chief Michael Stokes chose not to comment on their role in that type of event.

This is not the first time that someone has threaten to jump off of the bridge, in the past, people have followed through.

“I’ve been here 23 years and only known of five or six people jumping off of the bridge,” said Stewart.

After officers successfully talked the man away from the bridge, he was sent to an undisclosed location to be evaluated psychiatrically by a professional.

After his evaluation the man will likely face two courses of action, authorities said.

He could be placed in a mental facility or he could be released to a personal therapist and put on drug treatment.
