SELMA – Woodie Jackson remembers Selma High School’s playoff ouster at the hands of Talladega last year and is working on a game plan for Wednesday’s 10:30 a.m. rematch at Alabama State University that will keep it from happening again.

“We’re going to have to have better guard play than them, because that’s where their experience is,” Jackson said. “We can’t let them get easy putbacks and they can’t get easy transition baskets.”

How to make that game plan work may be a little more tricky.

Selma returned just one starter to this year’s team and while Jackson said the team has shown signs of being where it needs to be, there are still some loose ends that need to be tied up.

“I would grade us a C-plus or B-minus in the last two games,” Jackson said. “We just haven’t been able to put it together. We weren’t able to execute on offense.”

That will likely need to be worked out if the Saints want to keep playing.

Jackson said Talladega’s strength is the up tempo pace at which it likes to play.

“They’re real quick and they shoot the ball well,” Jackson said. “They want you to play fast and they try to speed the game up. We like to have a little more structure. If we don’t get the easy shot, we’re going to have to get penetration.”

Talladega is strong on both ends of the floor and Jackson said he was a little worried about the lack of experience his team has.

“We’re going to start facing stiff competition now that we’re down to the final 16 teams,” Jackson said. “Last year we played well, we just didn’t do what we needed to do. On this level, this is where you need to play every play like it’s your last.”
