During its meeting Tuesday night the Selma City Council approved a resolution supporting the establishment of a Selma Medical Academy, a magnet school to serve Selma City School students.

In the beginning this school would see students in grades 4-7 who would show potential in math and science. Eventually the school would include other grades.

Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan has had this brainchild for about a year. He has yet to formally present it to the newly elected school board, but several people have bandied about the idea for the last few months.

Gaining community support from organizations such as the City Council will aid the application of the Selma City Schools if they need to search out grants for assistance with the opening of the school.

Of course many challenges come with setting up a charter school for students. But such an endeavor would be worthy of the newly elected school board.

The school board, Obasohan and the public have much to discuss before this project comes to fruition. But it’s worth the effort.

The largest medical center in the Black Belt stands here in our midst. What better testament to our people than to send our children to medical schools or to schools that focus on medical technology and have them return to Selma.
