Karen Weir loves art, architecture and old things.

Last year the Art Guild had a show and offered a class with photographer Jim Morris of Tuscaloosa. She fell in love with the medium.

“That class was an epiphany for me,” Weir said. “His work struck a chord deep within and I was inspired to capture our local Black Belt area.”

Weir is drawn to the history of things. Her subjects are old things or events that feature old things. Some of her work is in black and white to give a vintage feel.

“There are so many things that are rapidly disappearing, either through fire or neglect and I want to preserve those memories for my grandchildren and for others interested in the way things used to be,” she said.

On Friday The Frame Shoppe will feature Weir’s photography during the Art Walk, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

The show will feature some creative framing of the photographs. Instead of the usual mat and black frame, the photographs’ frames will also reflect that vintage look — pewter to pick the black and white and old barn wood to accent the wood in some photographs.

Weir’s is not the only show Friday. At the Art Guild Gallery on Selma Avenue, the guild will host Sonia Martin’s private collection of her grandfather’s work from Belgium.

Fernand Coenderaet’s oils span the periods from 1905-1943.

The gallery show opens at 5 p.m. Friday.
