Although February is known as Black History month, February also shares the distinction of Alabama Career Technical month, an event of Dallas County Career Tech to celebrate technical fields of study and employment.

“It’s going to be a fun-filled month,” said Jerolene Williams, chairperson of the event. This year’s theme is “Invest in your future,” which is also the basis for the poster and essay contests sponsored by the school.

Contests begin on Feb. 2 for posters and Feb. 8 for essays. Winners will be announced on Feb. 23.

The school has events scheduled for the entire month to promote technical education. Students in the 10th grade from Southside High School, Dallas County High School and Keith High School are invited for tours of the school on Feb. 4, Feb. 11 and Feb. 16, respectively.

“We serve these three schools,” Williams said.

All members of the community are invited to the open house on Feb. 25. The celebrations will also culminate with a career fair at the school on Feb. 26 at 9 a.m.

“We invite all colleges, businesses, industry so the kids can ask questions about what services they provide,” Williams said.

Dallas County Career Tech is designed for students interested in becoming trained in vocational fields. Students graduate with the skills necessary of their professions.

“We are the best kept secret in Dallas County,” Williams said. “When they leave here they can go right into the work force.”
