SELMA — More than one week past Christmas, Shannon Linden doesn’t want to take down her Christmas tree and all her houseful of decorations yet.

She has collected decorations for more than 50 years and has more than 900 ornaments, collected from her trips around the world, gifts and from when her children were much younger, on her Christmas tree.

“I don’t even want to take it down,” Ms. Linden said. “It’s nostalgia. It makes me sad to take it down.”

When she was a child, her family decorated the tree with sugared orange slice candies, so she too has sliced candies on her tree.

“I’ve been doing this my whole life,” Ms. Linden said.

She needed four days to put all the ornaments on her tree and at least a few more days to put up all the other decorations. “I just did a little here and a little there,” Ms. Linden said.

Rosetta Moore cleaned all her decorations on Jan. 2. She spent 30 minutes putting all the items up before Christmas and spent one hour putting them all away. Her decorations stayed up until this date because she just didn’t want to put away the memories of watching her grandchildren on Christmas.

“I liked to watch them open up presents,” Ms. Moore said.

According to Kecia Moore, it is good luck to ring in the New Year with Christmas decorations still up, so she made sure to not take her decorations down until Jan. 3. With her two children, Ms. Moore spent a couple of hours putting up decorations, but even more time taking them down. “It’s much more fun to put them up than to take them down,” Ms. Moore said.
