SELMA — A discussion with what to do with the Selma City Marina site behind Bloch Park is set for the next meeting of the Selma City Council Parks and Recreation Committee.

The committee will meet Thursday, Jan. 7, at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

A restaurant at the city’s marina burned in September. At that time, officials said the building was a total loss.

This would be the first time the committee has discussed the site since voters approved a $12 million bond issue in October. Money from the bond issue was not specifically designated for the marina.

However, in late September on the heels of the fire and before the bond issue election, Elton Reece, executive director of the city Department of Recreation, said he’d like to see a permanent building owned by the city replace the one that burned.

At the time, Mr. Reece said he had drawn some sketches for a new building. He said he wanted to see a rustic building in keeping with the feel of the Alabama River area.

Mr. Reece also said he wants the marina to become a family location, which would attract local people and tourists.

At one point during the informal discussion, some council members and Mr. Reece said they would like to award concessions to the highest bidder.

There has been no further public talk about the building or the concessions.

The restaurant, a small structure near the landing where boaters launch their crafts, was owned by individuals, but built on city property.

The wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the building was completely destroyed, including most of the furniture in the area.

The state fire marshal said an electrical fire began in the kitchen, authorities said.

The marina has acted as a welcoming committee for boaters traveling through Selma by waterway.
