John Dodgen Swanson, 71, of Bluffton, SC died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Coastal Carolina Hospital, Hardeeville, SC.
He was born in Marietta, GA on February 8, 1938 to George Edward and Johnnie Kate Dodgen Swanson. He graduated from Marietta High School and Emory University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was also a graduate of the American Bankers Association Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. After a 34-year career in banking with the U.S. Treasury Department, Federal Reserve Bank and several commercial banks where he served as a senior operations officer, he spent five years as County Administrator for Dallas County, Alabama.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Morton Swanson of Bluffton and two sons, John Dodgen Swanson, Jr. and wife, Julie of Atlanta and CW04 Mark Edward Swanson, USMC (Ret.) and wife, Katherine of Bluffton. Also surviving are six grandchildren, LCpl Joshua E. Swanson, USMC, April Renee Swanson, Mary Kate Swanson, Elizabeth Shirley Swanson, Mary Grace Swanson and Kiersten McCrea Swanson and a brother, Richard W. Swanson and wife, Ruth.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 17, 2009 at The Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, SC and burial at 11:30 am, Friday, December 18, 2009 at Mountain View Cemetery, Marietta, GA.
