Mike Handley’s acrylic and realistic paintings of wildlife and the outdoors, sprinkled with a few pieces of classic cars, strawberries or chili peppers, will be displayed at the Selma Art Guild for the remainder of December as this month’s featured artist.

Sally Jordan, Art Guild president, brought Handley’s paintings back to the gallery from Montgomery after Handley was named best in show at the art show in June of this year.

“Since it was hunting season, we though we might get some hunters to come out there,” Jordan said. “It’s amazing what he’s done. He has bold colors and good flow.” As for Handley as a person, “he’s a quite interesting person and quite humble,” Jordan said.

Handley’s paintings sell for around $300 to $500, depending on the size of the piece. All paintings displayed in the gallery are available for purchase.

“It’s just another place for exposure,” said Sister Judy Kaiser, artist and Art Guild member.

Her favorite Handley painting displayed is “Something in the Wind” because she likes the expression of the deer. This painting is available for purchase for $300.

Kaiser has dabbled in painting for the past eight to 10 years.

“I do a bunch of things but my favorite is that I like to work with ink, but I’m getting into acrylic,” Kaiser said. “I’m not a professional, but I like to do it and it’s fun to see yourself get better.”

Some of Kaiser’s work is displayed in the Art Guild gallery, including an ink of carrots and one of a magnolia flower.

The Selma Art Guild will host the final weekend of Handley’s exhibit on Friday, Dec. 18 and Saturday, Dec. 19 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The gallery will be closed on Dec. 25 and Dec. 26 for the holidays.

January’s featured artist will be Edna Story, who currently has a painting displayed at Cahaba Bank on Citizen’s Parkway.
