General English, age 92, a resident of Selma, passed November 28, 2008. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 pm Saturday December 5, 2009 at Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Potters Station with Pastor Herman Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Garden directed by J. H. Williams &Sons Funeral Home.
He was born Dec. 20, 1916 in Selma, AL to the late George and Queen English.
He was united in marriage to Betty Tolbert and to this union two sons preceded him in death.
General English served Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church faithfully for more than seventy-four years including positions such as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Usher, Choir Member, Ward Leader, Treasurer and Deacon.
He is survived by three daughters; Rebecca C. (Horace) Curry of Gasden, AL, Mary (Henry) Solomon of Birmingham, AL, and Dorothy (Lee) Wilson of Selma; one son; Charles (Mary) Walker of Decatur, GA; a brother, Rev. Rueben (Arriebell) English of Compton, CA; three sisters, Rebecca Webb of Long Beach, CA, Julia Boggs and Lavada Fair of Mobile, AL; a brother-in-law John Tolbert, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 11 am until time of the funeral service.
