Concordia returns as national champions

BURLINGTON, Vt; — Concordia College Selma defeated Saint Briarcliffe College of Vermont in a shootout Sunday to capture the USCAA Men’s National Soccer Championship.

A pep rally and banner dedication will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday to welcome the soccer team home and display the trophy.

In the men’s game, the tournament trend continued as the game was decided in a penalty shootout after two overtime periods.

All-American Hyron Brown-Baptiste of Concordia College scored midway through the second half, before Briarcliffe College ‘s Jabneel Springer scored off a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1.

In the penalty shootout, Concordia College connected on its first four shots in defeating Briarcliffe. Concordia goalkeeper Akil Benjamin was named tournament MVP.
