SELMA — A three-sport four-year starter in high school who started four years at Auburn on a football scholarship and won the Pat Dye Leadership Award will speak at Monday night’s Selma Quarterback Club meeting.

Rob Pate, who wrote “A Tiger’s Walk: Memoirs of an Auburn Football Player,” will be this week’s feature speaker during Father and Son/Daughter Night, said Beau Boyd, the Quarterback Club president.

“This is a special night at the Quarterback Club,” Boyd said. “We are hoping that members will their son or daughter.”

Pate was born and raised in Birmingham, where he was a four-year starter in football, basketball, and baseball. He won the Class 5A Bryant-Jordan Achievement Scholarship and accepted an athletic scholarship to play football for the Auburn Tigers.

As a four-year starter for the Tigers, he was a member of many All-Conference teams, a two-time Academic All-America All-District selection, a four-time SEC Honor Roll recipient, and the Pat Dye Leadership Award winner.

Pate graduated from Auburn University in May 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology.

He then graduated from the UAB School of Optometry in May 2007. He practices in Hoover for EyeCare Associates Inc.

He lives in Chelsea with his wife of nine years, Dana, and their three daughters, Claire McKinley, Ellie Brooklyn and Jenna Kathryn.

In “A Tiger’s Walk” Pate battles the highs and lows of championship and losing seasons, coaching hirings and firings, and personal success and tragedy.

Someone who recently stepped off the field writes about the daily life in college football and what today’s game is genuinely like.

The final scheduled meeting of the Selma Quarterback Club will be coaching legend R.C. Slocum, the winningest coach in Texas A&M history. He coached 30 of his 31 years at College Station.
