With the June 3 third primary election approaching, the Alabama Democratic Conference recently endorsed six local candidates in the county elections.

For the County Commission seats, the ADC endorsed candidates Connel Towns Sr., District 1; Ezekiel Pettway, District 2; Darryl Moore, District 3; and Clifford Hunter, District 4.

Tanika Wagner is the endorsed candidate for tax collector and Tanya Thomas for tax assessor.

Candidates could not be reached when called for comment.

The endorsements were given after a screening committee, comprised of ADC members, interviewed the candidates and found that they shared the same objective as the ADC.

Sherri James, Dallas County ADC chair, said the organization’s mission is “to educate people on voting and registration.”

After the endorsement is received, the ADC then helps the candidate in campaigning. They do so by door-to-door canvassing, distributing pamphlets near polls and voter education.

Also, the ADC is available to help the candidates in any way.

The ADC was originally formed in 1960 by a small number of black Alabamians to help elect presidential candidate John F. Kennedy. In 1970, the organization officially began interviewing and selecting candidates. It has continuously held voter registration drives and strived to help elect reputable candidates.

Currently, the Dallas County chapter has 52 members.
