SELMA — The No. 3-ranked Morgan Academy volleyball team honored its lone senior Monday in its final home game.

Fittingly, senior Anne Woodruff got the match point with a kill as the Senators defeated the Hooper Colts 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19.

“I was glad that Anne got the last point,” Morgan coach Jennifer Moore said. “Especially against a very strong team like Hooper. They took us to five game last time we played.”

The Senators left a lot of excitement in the games, falling behind 5-1 early in Game 1 before going on a 12-3 run for a 24-17 lead. Catherine Armstrong was the catalyst in the first-game victory with unofficial totals of three digs and four kills.

“Catherine played great defense for us today,” Moore said. “And she had some key hits.”

Woodruff’s kill got the 25th point for the Senators in the first game.

In the second game, neither team got the advantage until Summer Pugh served at the 21-21 mark. Two aces by Pugh and a kill by April Clark gave Morgan the final five points in the second game.

Morgan jumped ahead in the final game with leads of 5-0, 10-4, 14-5 and 23-11 before Hooper outscored the Senators 8-1 to tighten the lead to 24-19. Woodruff’s kill ended the match.

Moore said her girls have a problem not unlike the Morgan Academy football team. Coach Brian King and his Senators have been within a few plays of victories this season.

Moore said, “We just weren’t able to finish those games. We let them too close toward the end.”
