SELMA — Dallas County football coach Darryl Burns knows how Francis Marion coach Javaris Jackson feels about this week’s game in Plantersville.

And, frankly, Burns is a little nervous.

Burns and his Hornets captured their first victory of the season last week, bouncing Holt 22-6. And Jackson and his Rams have yet to crack through on the winning side after four games.

So Burns said he believes somebody is going to be Francis Marion’s first victim; he just doesn’t want Dallas County (1-3) to fill that role.

“They’re scary because I want to make sure we’re not having a mental letdown,” Burns said. “We are in the same position last week that they’re in right now.”

Burns said he know how excited his team was after beating Bolt, especially after a 6-0 overtime loss to Greensboro.

“We needed that win,” he said.

Jackson said his Rams aren’t backing away from Dallas County, which Jackson said will bring about twice as many players to the game.

“I’m pretty optimistic about the game,” Jackson said. “We are a very small school, and Dallas County will dress out about 60 just to be intimidating. But they’ll only play about 15 or 16 guys.”

So what does an 0-4 team work on before a game?

“We are stressing team unity, being motivated and keeping positive about the game,” Jackson said. “We haven’t had any major problems, just a few nagging injuries. So I think we can be competitive.”

Burns said he also is concerned his squad could look past Francis Marion to next week’s game against a strong Jemison team.

“We’ve done a pretty good job of getting everyone prepared,” he said. “We’ve been really businesslike.”

The Hornets coach was pleased with his team’s scoring last week, piling up 22 points — almost twice as many points as its three earlier games combined.

“Offensively, we looked better this week than we have,” Burns said. “Getting those touchdowns in the last game helped.”

Although the flu took its toll on Dallas County the past two weeks, Burns said the team had gotten through the worst of it and may see returning players who were injured in the first game of the year.

IN OTHER GAMES, one ranked team visits Selma on Friday when No. 2 Edgewood invades Meadowview Christian School in AISA action.

The other two games involve area teams that are ranked. Also in AISA play, No. 8 Lowndes Academy entertains Autauga.

No. 4-ranked Maplesville goes to Autaugaville in AHSA Class 1A Region 3 action.
