SELMA — Now that Central Christian Academy coach Darrell Walker has seen how eight-man football is played, he said he plans to change his strategy for tonight’s game against Victory-Columbus.

The Warriors (0-1) kick off at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium after last week’s 48-8 season-opening loss at North River.

Walker, however, has different moves in mind.

“It was the first time to see eight-man football,” Walker said. “We went back to the drawing board. We are going to have more people on the line and probably blitz more.”

Eight-man football is not uncommon among smaller schools that cannot field large teams. The style of play is similar to professional indoor football.

The three players who are usually pulled off a conventional 11-man team are two linemen and a receiver on offense and two defensive backs and a lineman on defense.

CCA will be playing its first home game in more than a year after the 2008 football season was discontinued. Walker said the student body is obviously excited about the game.

“Everyone is very happy to be playing at home again,” he said. “We had a pep rally today.”

About Victory-Columbus, Walker said he expects a test.

“They are supposed to be tough,” he said. “They use the spread offense, so that will be different for us. It will be a great exercise to see how we respond to that offense and see how far we go through the season. We are looking to be competitive.”
