Black Belt transportation projects announced

Many projects in the Black Belt are on the list for stimulus money from the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Most of these projects have been reported before, but brought to attention Monday after Gov. Bob Riley released a statement from his office saying the state has 216 highway and bridge, 83 transit and 10 aviation projects funded from the stimulus money awarded the state.

The American Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus act, saw $1 billion poured into Alabama, extended health insurance for laid-off workers and provided tax cuts for more than 97 percent of Alabama’s residents.

In his statement, Riley said, “Stimulus projects will be awarded in every county of Alabama to improve travel and help economic development. In addition, by using stimulus dollars on these improvements, it frees up non-stimulus funding and allows us to redirect these existing dollars for work on other planned highway projects throughout our state.”

The transportation department reports funding for areas with more than 200,000 population to total $97,763,209. Birmingham will have the greatest share at $22,996,589; Mobile follows with $22,006,128; Huntsville, $7,389,965; Phenix City, $1,696,463 and Lillian/Pensacola, $66,119.

The total funding for urban areas with population ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 is $24,189,152. Montgomery receives the greatest share of this at $6,822.999. Other cities receiving money in this category are Anniston, $2,628,122; Auburn/Opelika, $2,083,958; Decatur, $1,812,898; Dothan, $2,106,656; Gadsden, $2,138,433; Shoals/Florence, $2,470,761; and Tuscaloosa, $4,050,579.
