William Smyly

William E. “Bill” Smyly of Selma died June 10, 2009 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born in Dallas County, Alabama, on March 24, 1928, to the late Charles and Eula Garrison Smyly and lived the majority of his life in Selma. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, June, and his brother Charles and Charles’ wife, Jane.
Bill graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for many, many years as an engineer with the U.S. Government and retired only to open his own business, Smyly Engineering, in Selma. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Selma and especially enjoyed time with his Sunday School class, the Mavericks.
Bill is survived by 2 sons, Randy (Mickie) and Todd (Toni); 3 grandchildren, Matt, Lindsay, and Drew; and 1 great grandson, Reece Simpson, all of Little Rock, Arkansas; 2 brothers, Glenn (Ruth) of Tuscaloosa, and Lynn of Selma; 1 sister, Joyce Shaw (Marvin) of Jacksonville; and by his brother-in-law, Wendell Parrish of Aliceville.
He has many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him as well as members of Selma BPOE Lodge 167 of which he was a member for 40 plus years.
Bill was a quiet man with a quick, quick wit. We loved him and will miss him.
Graveside services will be 3:00p.m. Saturday, June 20 in the New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.
