Junior tourney continues today

The final round of boys golf in the 49th annual Bud Burns Dixie Junior Invitational will be played today after the girls completed their competition Tuesday.

In the 16- to 18-year-old girls division, Valerie Brownell of Prattville shot an 84-81—165 to take the age group, followed by Jessica Stewart (87-92—179).

Taylor Appleyard shot a 79-76—155 for first in the 13- to 15-year-old girls. Anna Davis (86-96-182) placed second, followed by Tori Smith (95-88—183) in third place.

Sarah Battye’s 118 was the only score for nine holes in the 10- to 12-year-olds.

In the first round for the boys, Will Garner paced the 17- to 18-year-olds with an even-par 71. Jamey Lester was second with 72, one shot ahead of Casey O’Toole and Troy Cook. Caleb Lovelady, Grant Gilbert and Jackson Byars were three shots off the lead with 74s.

Michael Johnson had the lowest round of the day with a 3-under 68 in the 15- to 16-year-olds. Jeff Barranco was one shot behind Johnson and led John Michael O’Toole by one stroke.

Joe Limbaugh and Max Coulls each shot 72s, followed by Josh Atkinson (73), Joe Stepnes (74) and Witt McLeod (74).

The 11- to 12-year-olds were led by Jesse Jernigan with an 82, trailed by Jake DeZoort’s 84, William Walker III’s 88 and Robert Sorrell’s 90.

Micah Saunders shot a 41 for nine holes in the 10-and-under to lead Gauge Cornelius (44) and Trey Philpott (51).
