The president of Alabama Southern Community College says he will resign from the Monroeville school in June.

John Johnson said his decision was based on another career opportunity and that the school will always be a part of his life.

Johnson has been Alabama Southern’s president since 1989. He sent Chancellor Bradley Byrne his resignation letter on Dec. 1.

The state school board has a recommendation to accept Johnson’s resignation on the agenda for its Thursday meeting.

A complaint was filed against the school by Equal Employment Opportunity Commission several months ago but Johnson and Byrne said that was not a factor in the resignation.
