Johnny Moss III might appear young at 35, but he says he’s enough in the middle he could serve all constituents of Ward 2 well.

Moss recently met with The Selma Times-Journal editorial board to talk about his candidacy for a seat on the Selma City Council.

“I can serve the needs of both,” Moss said of the wide-ranging ages of people in his district.

Ward 2 has issues similar to other areas of the city: Infrastructure in need of repair; traffic control and an increased police presence.

If elected, Moss proposes a team approach to helping solve those issues in Ward 2. He said he’d split the ward into four or five sections with each section having a team captain. As councilman, Moss said he’d meet quarterly with the captains and residents to hear concerns and suggestions.

“I believe we can work collaboratively,” he said.

On the economic development front, Moss said he supports home-grown businesses first. He sees the need to develop the workforce of 16-to-25 year olds, which make up a quarter of the area’s residents.

Moss knows about workforce development. He’s taught classes and works in marketing at Wallace Community College Selma.

On other issues, Moss:

Promises to treat other council members with respect at meetings

Supports development of a comprehensive strategic plan for the city

Advocates a smaller school board of five members, perhaps seven at the most

Sees pubic safety as a community effort.
