For golfers in search of a couple of cocktail parties with a little golf mixed in this weekend, Selma Country Club may not be the best destination.

The 2008 Selma Country Club championship tees off Saturday with an 8:30 shotgun start.

This is the tournament’s 85th year, and all golfers are club members.

But players expecting an atmosphere similar to the club’s recent Member-Guest tournament — socializing on the course, in addition to social parties and events planned around the tournament — may want to stray from the club’s fairways this weekend.

“It’s not really a social event,” said Tommy Burns, Selma Country Club’s golf pro. “We just play and that’s it. It’s a purely competitive tournament.”

Participants are broken down into four separate fields — juniors, ladies, men, and seniors. They are pre-flighted by handicap prior to the tournament.

Currently, 89 members have signed up — 62 players in the men’s division, 21 juniors and six ladies.

The men and seniors play at 1p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The juniors and ladies

play at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The juniors are split into fields according to gender and age.

The boys’ field has five age groups — seven-and-under, eight to 10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18. The girls are split into two groups — 11-and-under and 12-18.

The club championship coincides with the member-member tournament. The field is comprised of two-man teams, with each team playing the net best ball.
