More than a week after the sudden disappearance of George McKay, authorities remain baffled by a lack of information that could lead to his recovery.

McKay went missing after turning in a funeral policy for his mother, Elizabeth McKay, to Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home on Aug. 4. He also turned in three policies for himself that day.

Now, the Selma man is missing without any trace of his whereabouts.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned about his well-being,” said Capt. Roy Freine of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. “No one’s seen him or heard from him. Usually with a missing person, someone has seen him or reported that he’s been spotted here or there. We hadn’t had any reports that anyone has seen him anywhere.

“That’s kind of unusual for this amount of time.”

McKay came into the Lawrence Funeral Home between 2:30 and 3 p.m. last Monday to turn in the policies. That was the last time anyone had seen him.

McKay likely went to his mother’s burial site at Awin Cemetery in Wilcox County before disappearing.

“We know he marked the grave off because it was marked off, and we gave him the grave markers,” said Lawrence Funeral Home director Scott Girlie. “After he left here, he undoubtedly went to the cemetery. The gravediggers dug the grave that Tuesday.”

However, McKay wasn’t at his mother’s visitation Tuesday or her funeral Wednesday.

He didn’t raise any red flags when he came into the funeral home last week.

“A lot of people will come in, and they’ll bring in a stack of policies, and they’ll say, ‘Here, you know more about this, so you decipher all this,’” Girlie said. “Nobody knows what he was thinking, but that happens.”

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department is conducing an aerial search with state police. Efforts to scour the ground have been hampered because searches of McKay’s bank and credit card records have come up empty.

“We just don’t have anywhere to go,” Freine said. “He could be in Dallas County; he could be in Wilcox; he could be in Lowndes. He’s in the national computer, so if anyone comes across his vehicle, he will be found.”

McKay, a 57-year-old white male, is described as 5-foot-8, weighing 150 pounds. He drives a crimson 1998 Chevy S-10 stepside pickup, license plate 27C343H.
