When George McKay turned in his mother’s burial policy to Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home last week, he decided to turn in his own as well.

That has police searching for the 57-year-old Dallas County man, who has been missing since Aug. 5.

“We’ve checked his bank records, and there’s no activities as far as banks,” said Investigator John Hatfield of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. “And as we presently speak, we’re doing an aerial search with the Alabama State Troopers attempting to find his truck.”

Authorities are conducting a search that covers the area between his home at 969 County Road 18 to Jones Lock and Dam in Lowndes County.

Wilcox County law enforcement is searching a wooded area in Awin, almost four miles southeast of Pine Apple, near the cemetery where McKay’s mother was buried.

McKay, a Vietnam veteran, had lived with his mother for quite some time, according to Hatfield. His ex-wife, Mary Vann, reported him missing last Tuesday.

McKay turned in the death policies around 3 p.m. Monday and did not show up to his mother’s visitation Tuesday or her funeral Wednesday.

Other than his mother, McKay had no other immediate family in the area.
