Keith met Wednesday with The Selma Times-Journal Editorial Board to talk about her candidacy in the Aug. 26 municipal election.

Keith said she sees the duties of a council member, “to take care of their little slice of the pizza.”

The greatest need in her area is public safety. She talked about residents of Ward 2 saying how frightened they are to venture out along HIghland Avenue at night to shop or walk in their neighborhoods.

“Overall, it’s safety,” Keith said. “People are just scared.”

Ward 2 is a mix of businesses and residential. The area needs improvements in infrastructure, such as sewer and drainage.

Keith said getting improvements for Ward 2 also depends on the give-and-take of the council. Certainly, conflicts will arise, but the council can deal with them through working together and compromise. Yet, she’s taking a wait-and-see attitude toward any bond issue to achieve those goals. “It’s hard to say,” Keith said. “We’ll have to see what that entails.”

On other issues, Keith supports an elected school board member. “it gets the community more involved in education.”

She also is opposed to having council members serve on the Water and Sewer Board. “it doesn’t make sense for a board member to serve on a board, which they appoint,” she said.
