Selma man arrested after weekend shooting

Authorities have arrested a Selma man as a suspect in a weekend shooting.

Gregory Sykes, 31, of Selma is in Dallas County Jail charged with assault first degree. He will have no bond until his court appearance, according to Lt. David Evans, a spokesman for the Selma Police Department.

Officers responded to the shooting at 12:35 a.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Church Street.

“Upon their arrival, the officers found a 43-year-old male victim lying in his front yard,” said Evans. “He had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his face caused from an unknown type and caliber of firearm.”

The victim, who police did not identify, was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center and later to a Birmingham hospital. His condition is unknown.

Officers arrested Sykes later Saturday morning at his residence. Investigators continue to work on a motive for the shooting, said Evans.
