Selma police officers let their noses lead them to the stash during a routine traffic stop Monday.

Officers pulled over a vehicle in which the driver did not wear a seat belt. The officers smelled marijuana in the vehicle.

“This initiated an investigation that led to the arrest of 20-year-old De’Angelo Tabb of Chickasaw Street,” said Lt. David Evans, a spokesman for the department.

The investigation resulted in the seizure of 114 grams of marijuana, $1,562 in cash, an SKS Assault Rifle with clips and ammunition, a .40 caliber Glock pistol reported stolen from Hoover and clips and ammunition and other items used to sell drugs.

Evans said officers also confiscated a Toshiba laptop computer believed stolen.

“At this time, detectives are going through the procedures to try to track down the lawful owner,” Evans said. “They ask, however, that if anyone is missing a Toshiba laptop computer, please call the detective division at 874-2125 to try and identify it.”

Officers booked Tabb into the Dallas County Jail and charged him with unlawful possession of marijuana, first degree; and receiving stolen property, second degree. Bond was set at $60,000 on the marijuana charge and the bond on the receiving charge is set at $30,000 for a total bond of $90,000. He remained in jail late Tuesday.

Evans said detectives gathered very strong evidence Tabb used the weapons during drug dealing.

“Detectives have already been in contact with ATF agents in order to initiate those proceedings,” Evans said. “This will bring further, very serious charges against him through the federal court system.”

Mayor James Perkins Jr. and Chief William T. Riley III praised the drug unit’s work.

Said Riley, “It is always a good thing when we can get a large amount of drugs and illegal guns off of the streets. We will continue in our efforts to arrest the criminals in our city.
