The Selma Majors broke out of a weekend-long funk in the sub-state tournament Sunday, beating Brantley 6-2 by virtue of the elements.

The first inning did not bode well for Selma. Starting pitcher Kevin Aaron walked Brantley’s first three batters and was pulled for Matthew Ross.

Ross gave up two runs when a Jared Hall ground ball slid under the glove of first baseman Shane Moreland to score Terry McClain and Chase Hall, giving Brantley a 2-0 lead. Ross stopped the bleeding with two strikeouts.

For an 0-3 team, such a start would be detrimental. But Selma answered in the bottom of the inning.

Selma catcher Tyler Hollis led off with a bloop single, and Matthew Ross sacrificed him over to second. A Jacob Paxton single through the left side scored him, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Selma took the lead for good with a five-run second inning. Andrew Harrison started things with a bloop single over shortstop Anthony Gulley. Brantley pitcher Garrett Cross hit Thomas Austin and walked Mark Englett to load the bases. J.R. Lowe, hit a single into the right-center gap, scoring Harrison and Austin.

“I’d been struggling at the plate, so the hit felt really good,” said Lowe.

Lowe’s hit would have been a double, but Englett was held at first base until the ball fell in.

Selma’s onslaught continued. Hollis singled up the middle to score two more, and Lowe came home on a sacrifice fly from Aaron.

That’s where the game ended. Clouds formed and thunder rolled behind Paterson Field for most of the second inning. When the inning ended, the tarp was rolled onto the field and the skies opened up. After a 2 1/2 hour rain delay, both teams decided to end the game, and Selma was awarded the win.

For a team aspiring to reach the state finals, the results were frustrating.

“We’ve either out-hit or gotten as many hits as every team we’ve played,” said coach Murray Austin. “We have not been out-hit by anybody here yet. We just could not get the runs in.”
