Voters will go to the polls to determine the Republican candidates in two races on Tuesday.

Statewide runoffs are set for the Republican seats for the Public Service Commission President and the Criminal Court of Appeals Place 1. Polls open in Dallas County at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, a former cabinet member for Gov. Bob Riley, opposes Matt Chancey, a conservative Christian activist, for the candidate’s spot as President of the Public Service Commission. The nominee will face Democrat Lucy Baxley, Riley’s former lieutenant governor from 2003-07.

The runoffs are staged because no single candidate got at least 50 percent of the vote.

In the June 3 primary election, Cavanaugh got 87,128 votes (47 percent) statewide, and Chancey got 52,891 (29 percent).

Cavanaugh pulled in 61 votes in Dallas County, and Chancey had 31.

Beth Kellum, a staff attorney for the Court of Criminal Appeals, runs against Lucie McLemore, a one-time Montgomery County District Court judge, for a spot on the Court of Criminal Appeals. The nominee will face Democrat Clyde Jones, a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge.

Beth Kellum got 58,462 votes (34 percent) in the June primary, and McLemore had 40,770 (24 percent).

McLemore, however, was stronger in Dallas County with 30 votes to Kellum’s 19.

The deadline to apply for medical and business emergencies is no later than the close of business today. The deadline for absentee ballots has passed.

Dallas County will follow the same procedures as the primary election.
