You never know exactly what will come of a meeting of artists and their supporters.

But rest assured, something beautiful will happen.

And so it seems Selma and Dallas County have chosen the right path to drawing attention to the positive here through a group call the Dallas County Arts Alliance.

Through a series of teams, this organization has hit upon an idea to make downtown gorgeous and use the talents of the people who have chosen to return or move to Selma.

Here&8217;s how it works: Businesses, organizations and individuals agree to sponsor a butterfly for $1,000. The money is halved with $500 going to the wooden hand-crafted structure and its base and the remainder to the artist.

Each sponsor and artist will work together to select a theme that reflects the interests of the business, organization or individual.

The artist makes this happen by Market Day in October.

On that day, the alliance will unveil all the butterflies and exhibit them from the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Jeff Davis Avenue and up and down Water Avenue.

This is a way to show off our talented people, our creativity and to include everyone, regardless of race or class or any other taxonomy we unconsciously choose.

This exhibition of butterflies in the butterfly capital of Alabama also will bring tourists to our city.

We&8217;re known for the bridge and the struggle for voting rights, but many people do not know us for our other attributes.

Take all of those things together, and Selma is a jewel in the Black Belt.
