50 employees of the Selma City School System will get break on gas this summer.

The Selma City School Board unanimously agreed to implement a four-day workweek for maintenance and central office staff in a special called meeting Saturday at the central office on Broad Street.

The schedule will take effect June 9-July 25. After that, the regular work schedule will resume.

Employees will come in earlier and leave later Monday through Thursday to fulfill their required amount of weekly hours.

Verdell Lett-Dawson, interim superintendent, called the schedule &8220;a good morale builder.&8221;

Some of the employees travel from as far as Valley Grande and Montgomery to work.

The price of regular gasoline is $3.99 at some stations in Selma, slightly above the national average of $3.971, according to AAA Alabama.

The national average for mid-grade is $4.216 and $4.368 for premium.

The Dallas County School Board approved a similar schedule for clerical, bookkeeping, transportation and maintenance workers earlier this month.

County road workers went to a four-day workweek last year and are continuing the schedule as well as consolidating jobs by scheduling work by district.

Dawson said the schedule will not affect the summer school program, and supervisors&8217; schedules may differ from other central office staff according to their workloads.
