Remembering the sacrifices

Everyone in front of Memorial Stadium on Monday morning had a reason to be there.

Some were current soldiers or war veterans. Some were mothers, fathers, spouses or children of soldiers who had died or are currently serving their country.

For about an hour, a small section of Selma stopped to remember.

Her nephew, James Henry Marshall, was a Vietnam War veteran, and his name is listed on the monument in front of the stadium.

Selma&8217;s VFW Post 3016 held its annual Memorial Day tribute in front of a crowd of about 100.

City Council president George Evans served as guest speaker and praised the mixture of both men and women that came out to support the event. Quoting Gen. George S. Patton, Evans asked that Selmians &8220;thank God that men like these lived rather than regret that they died.&8221;

Members of the VFW brought the ceremony to a close by placing wreaths on the monument and saluting.
