Post office officials want citizens to aware of problems that may cause mail delivery delays.

In honor of Mailbox Improvement Week, May 19 to 24, postal patrons are asked to inspect their mailbox areas for stability and security.

One common problem is placing garbage cans in front of mailboxes when they are taken to the curb for trash pickup.

Theresa Myracle, deliver supervisor at the Selma Post Office, said not only can that delay mail delivery, it&8217;s a safety hazard.

It is also important that adults be cautious of children running up to postal trucks.

Loose hinges on a mailbox or leaning mailbox posts are other things often overlooked by postal patrons, but can also be a hazard for carriers or other motorists.

Myracle said she often gets calls from patrons wanting to purchase mailboxes. The boxes can be purchased anywhere, as long as they meet postal standards:

Patrons can call any post office manager if they have questions at 874-4678 or they can visit the U.S. Postal Service&8217;s Web site at www.usps.com for more information and for other postal services.
