About 400 Selma youths are in the running for city jobs.

The prospective workers will find out who&8217;s in and who&8217;s not after 4 p.m. Thursday when the city holds its summer worker lottery at City Hall.

Valerie Jones, the city&8217;s human resources director, said the last of the applications came in Friday.

Here&8217;s how the lottery will work: Jones will put all the names in a box. Each of the city council members representing eight wards will draw eight names. That amounts to 64 of the 81 jobs for which there is funding. The mayor and council president will draw an equal amount for the remainder of the jobs.

The young people will work 16 hours a week at $5.85 per hour for six weeks, said Jones. They are scheduled to work Monday through Thursday only and will receive bi-weekly pay.

Last year, the city hired 114 young people.
