Some city school students have proved they can compete nationally.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Clark Elementary brought home several trophies and other awards recently from the National Math Bee Tournament.

The Math Bee is an online tournament in which students in grades compete in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The students competed with more than 15,000 students in 37 states at the McWane Center in Birmingham after competing in the local and state tournaments.

Placing first to fourth, winners received trophies for their school, ribbons and certificates. The first place winner won a $1,000 scholarship to Virginia College.

The online tournament is powered by an online math game, ButterUp, which is correlated with the state department&8217;s mathematics course of study and academic standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and No Child Left Behind.

The students were recognized at Thursday&8217;s Selma City School Board meeting, as parents, teachers, school board members and other attendees applauded their accomplishments.
