MONTGOMERY – The young Concordia College baseball team held its own in one of two contests against the Huntingdon Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Concordia lost a 6-5 game in the opener of a doubleheader, but then fell 12-0 in the nightcap.

“We haven’t played since April 3 due to the weather,” said Concordia coach Raymond Brown. “We were glad just to get back on a baseball field. But we’re a young team with nothing but freshmen and sophomores. We just have to continue to play hard.”

The Hawks (21-15) got the winning run in the seventh inning when Garrett Sweat drove in Adam Shipp on a sacrifice fly.

The Hornets (8-14) turned a 5-1 deficit into a 5-5 tie in the top half of the sixth in game one. With one out, shortstop Reiko Stevens drew a walk, which was followed by five consecutive hits. Jim Harson, one of the leading hitters in the USCAA, hit a soft liner to left; A.J. Ward, who’s among the top 10 hitters in the USCAA, lined an RBI single to right field. Harson scored from third after a failed pickoff attempt. The next batter, Benji Williams, followed with a double down the third base line. Then Josh Thomas beat a throw from deep second for an infield single and an RBI. Catcher Watt Travis then lined one to left, driving in the fourth run in the inning.

Jammell Terry started for the Hornets, going three innings. Jacob Graves pitched two innings, and Harson threw 1 1-3 innings, taking the loss.

The Hornets outhit the Hawks 8-7 in the game. Harson led Concordia with two hits, including a double.. Ward finished with two RBIs.

Concordia managed just two hits in the second game. They got a runner to third base just one time in the game. Hornet pitching also gave up nine walks and 10 hits, including two home runs in the game.
