Local players chosen as all-state

Frankie Sullivan has had some kind of week.

He was the obvious star in the Alabama-Mississippi All Star game in Pelham Thursday night, and Wednesday he was named Player of the Year in 2A basketball.

Sullivan barely missed being voted the top player in the state and is among the honorees in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state basketball teams released today.

Sullivan was named to the ASWA Super Five team after winning his fifth state championship and leading the Bobcats to their 10th overall. He joined Nick Williams (LeFlore), Wayne Dedrick (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa), Andrew Steele (John Carroll) and JaMychal Green (St. Jude), who was voted Mr. Basketball for 2008.

Selma guard/forward Ashley Grimes led the Lady Saints to their first Final Four in four years, and was selected to 6A girls’ second team. Grimes helped Selma to an undefeated regular season and a regional championship.

Selma center Wendell Lewis garnered honorable mention honors.

R.C. Hatch coach Homer Davis Jr. finished second in 2A Coach of the Year voting behind Chris Randle of White Plains.

In the AISA, Chelsie Kilpatrick of Lowndes Academy was named to the girls’ second team, and Kayla Mason was an honorable mention selection.
