D Night Spot will not open for a long time.

When it does re-open, two licensed and armed security guards approved by the city will keep people on site.

That&8217;s the agreement struck between the Selma City Council and Eddie Mae Stewart, the wife of Doney Roy Stewart, the club&8217;s owner on Monday.

Stewart said her husband has had surgery recently and will not open the doors to the club until he has recovered.

D Night spot will get a reprieve this Saturday when a relative of the couple&8217;s holds a funeral repast there. Council members agreed to the gathering, which will be for family members only, after ensuring police will patrol the area frequently.

The couple has operated the club next to their Maxey Street home for the past 10 years, and they have lived on Maxey Street for nearly 40 years.

There were two incidents that resulted in deaths outside the club in recent months, prompting city council members to take a look at the establishment.

On Jan. 13, police were called to the club for a fight, but arrived after the incident. Eddie Marzette died following a crash on Maxey Street between Water and Alabama avenues. Police believe Marzette had been stabbed in the leg outside the club and said he likely passed out in his car before the crash.

Five men were charged in the Thanksgiving 2007 beating death of Charles DuBose and are awaiting trial. Testimony during preliminary hearings for the five men revealed that DuBose produced a handgun outside the club and fired. After the shooting, witnesses said, DuBose was beaten by the five men. All five are awaiting their trials. They are charged with murder.
