Mayor James Perkins Jr. will give the State of the City Address at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.

Still working on his address on Sunday afternoon, Perkins release few specifics of his address, but did say he plans to speak on the city&8217;s 2007 audit report, which will be released at tonight&8217;s Selma City Council meeting.

Also on the agenda will be the past, present and future growth of the city, public safety and newly appointed police chief, William T. Riley III.

City councilpersons Johnnie Leashore, Jannie Venter, Jean Martin, and Reid Cain have said they plan to attend the address.

Leashore, Martin and Cain said they hope the mayor will update the citizens on the status of the Selma Police Department.

Riley took the oath of office on March 4. Leashore said he understands that Riley&8217;s still getting adjusted in his new role, but hopes that plans are in the works to recruit new officers.

New industry, poor drainage, riverfront development and falling infrastructure are other issues councilpersons are hoping to see addressed.

Perkins said he&8217;s &8220;expecting a reasonable turnout,&8221; but encourages all citizens and city officials to come out.

Council President George Evans did not confirm whether or not he would be in attendance. He declined to comment, as he has announced his candidacy for mayor, and said any comment he would make could be misconstrued.

Councilpersons Sam Randolph, Bennie Ruth Crenshaw, Cecil Williamson, and Dr. Geraldine Allen could not be reached for comment.
